Pollution is limiting clean water

Vietnam's rivers have been so polluted that the clean water supply is greatly diminished. Efforts must be taken to clean the water supply as well as curb ongoing pollution. People need to be educated about proper waste disposal and fined if guidelines are not followed.

Vietnam's energy program receives coveted prize nomination

A biogas program that is held jointly between Vietnam and the Netherlands has received a nomination for an international prestigious prize on energy and environment called the daily "Lao Dong". The two countries launched the project in 2003 in an effort to find a sustainable energy source and reduce fossil fuel use. The prize will be awarded in Belgium, early 2007.

Vietnam will be more active in fighting crime

The Cambodian Ministry of Interior and the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security have joined together to get tough on crime in 2007. The focus will be on combating terrorism, transnational crime rings, human trafficking, drug smuggling, money laundering, and illegal immigration.

New watchdog to oversee wildlife

Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is going to take care of Vietnam's animals and plants. The Ministry has created an agency to carry out the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. As a convention member CITES will manage the trade and breeding of plants and wild animals.

Excellent rice crop

A much needed bumper crop of rice is being harvested in the Mekong Delta this year. An infestation from the brown planthopper caused many losses to the previous crop. The agricultural sector’s and farmers’ working together to eradicate the pest led to the successful harvest before Tet.
