Vietnam in negotiations with Qantas

Vietnam is negotiating to sell a stake in its Pacific Airlines to Qantas. The deal could give Quantas “backdoor access” to more Asian markets through its low-cost offshoot, Jetstar.

According to analysts, even a minority stake in Pacific Airlines could provide Qantas to capacity to get around landing rights restrictions and open access to more regional destinations. Qantas’ financial stake in Pacific Airlines could also provide Jetstar’s Ho Chi Minh City passengers the domestic of Pacific Airlines.

Jetstar operates at around 40 percent of the cost of Qantas full-service operations. Jetstar started flying to Asian destinations including Ho Chi Minh City in November. Meanwhile, Pacific Airlines has domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi and international flights to Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan and plans to fly to Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and India, according to its Web site. Pacific Airlines is a "value-based airline," which has fares that are 10 percent to 25 percent lower those of a full service airline yet it still offers food and drinks on flights longer than two hours.

Coal mine collapses killing 2 and trapping others

Two miners were killed and 10 others trapped on Tuesday for 13 hours. The tragedy occurred when the two miners accidentally tapped into a pocket of water 230 feet underground, which unleashed a torrent of water through the tunnel causing to collapse. The rescue effort to dig out the 10 uninjured survivors took 13 hours. Coal mining accidents are an unfortunate regular occurrence in Vietnam each year. The worst accident was in 1999 when 19 workers died in Quang Ninh, the country's main coal-producing province.

E-Customs program wider rollout in 2008

The e-customs pilot program has rolled out in Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong city and is due to launch nationwide next year. E-customs should shorten the time it takes to clear customs for imports and exports. Almost 400 customs declarations forms with tax revenues of 3.8 trillion Vietnamese dong, which is US$237.5 million, between May 5 and December 12, 2006.
