Although most people still refer to Ho Chi Minh City as Saigon, that doesn't stop it from being the bustling shopping mecca of Vietnam. Name brands articles can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of what they cost in the West. Ho Chi Minh City is the hot spot of travelers and locals alike.

New planes for Vietnam Airlines

Vietnam Airlines is getting ten new Airbus A321 passenger jets and the second one arrived at Noi Bai International Airport on Thursday. Four more will be delivered later this year. Another four are scheduled for arrival in the next two years. Vietnam Airlines is expanding so it will improve the quality of its domestic flight service, satisfy its plan to commence flights to the US, as well as open up new routes and increase training and the application of new technology. All these efforts are directed at meeting a sustainable growth rate of 12-14 per cent.

Many injured 4 killed in bus crash

At about 6:20am Wednesday two buses traveling at a high rate of speed on the National Highway in the Phu Loc district collided head on instantly killing four and leaving six others suffering from brain trauma. This accident was the second in the district within the last two weeks. In the previous accident on January 10, five bus passengers were killed and eight were seriously injured. According to the recent statistics from the Health Ministry the average fatalities per year from traffic accidents in Vietnam is 11,000.

Bui Van Duc, director of the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre, said that Vietnam will try to attract weather experts into working with the government as well as offering international training to forecasters in an attempt to improve disaster preparedness. Those comments were made during a workshop directed at improving response to natural disasters such as the two typhoons that hit coastal regions last year.

Truong Dinh Tuyen, Vietnam’s Minister of Trade, repeatedly urges increasing exports with China so that the trade gap will be reduced. Vietnam has advantages in 14 product categories and its export of these products to China can be boosted.
