Few people know that Vietnam was the first independent republic in Southeast Asia. With the Declaration of Independence on September 2nd 1945, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born. The tumultuous region makes for fascinating study, as this article shows.

Museum for Vietnam vets is opened

Graeme Kerford recalls that when a returned home after a draft that sent him to Vietnam for a year of military service, he was spat on by the crowds. Recently he was among more than 1,000 veterans, their families and members of the Vietnamese community, to witness the opening of Australia's first museum dedicated to their war.

The choice for this venue is largely a result of Vietnam's policy of simultaneously courting capitalism while maintaining ties with its one-time communist allies. With some of Japan's largest companies being amongst the biggest investors in the Vietnamese economy, it was a natural choice for them.
