US and Vietnam to pursue free trade agreement

After meeting on Friday, US Trade Representative, Susan Schwab and visiting Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem said that the US and its former battlefield enemy Vietnam are to have talks that could lead to a bilateral free trade agreement.

Aiming to rapidly develop its sea-borne economy, the Vietnamese Government is working out a master plan and issuing policies to attract developmental investment, including the construction of a seaport system. According to this stategy the maritime economy will account for 55-60% of the nation’s combined export turnover by the year 2020.
